Hi,
I'm planning a trip for the next month and it's either to Paris or
London - depending on other people, it might be by myself. Does
anyone have any suggestions for doing a solo trip to either of
those places?

I'm sure you'll get alot of different answers. For the most part
they'll be based on personal preferences.
I for one love London! It's incredibly lively but crowded. There's
always something going on, no matter what you're into. But I'm
going to throw you a curveball...go to Paris!
Brief Reasons:
1) The British Pound is kicking the dollar's ass and has been
steadily for the past 3-4 years. Right now $1 = 2 pounds and
change. Long and short, it's very expensive.
2) Culturally speaking, it's not much different than the states and
the tourist traps leave much to be desired.
3) The Brits are friendly enough but it's a very crowded and fast
paced city. The clubs are AWESOME (My personal fave is Cargo) and
the bars are laid back but a relaxing destination it is not.
4) The tube's layout is common sense, it's easy to get around but
you're looking at alot of travel time between certain destinations
-- riding the tube during evening rush (i.e. with commuters) is
HELL.
5) My favorite areas are Camden (really cool pubs & people) and
Carnaby street/Soho (cool shops & pubs)
Paris:
1) Although the Euro is doing better than the dollar, it's not off
the charts like the British Pound.
2) There's alot to see and do and it's small enough to walk around
and see the sights. The Louve, Arc de Triomphe, and Eiffel Tower
are all within walking distance of each other.
3) The food ROCKS! And it won't destroy your wallet.
4) There's lots of little places to lose yourself in. It's a pretty
compact city compared London so you can just look around and
explore leisurely. If you're going solo this is most definitely a
plus.
5) At first you'll probably be taken aback by the submachine gun
toting soldiers patrolling the streets but rest assurred they're
there for your safety and Paris is overall a safe city (even after
dark). There's been a bit a civil unrest lately and there's an
unemployment problem but don't let it bother you, chances are
you'll never be touched by it.
6) Everyone is relatively courteous and speaks English, try to
return the favor (speak a little French), they'll appreciate it.
7) Did I mention there's so much to see?
Like I said before, I love London and I go there at least once a
year (friends) but if I had to make a suggestion it would be Paris.

I am completely sold on Paris thanks to your recommendations and
break down of my two options. To be honest, I'm not really
interested in spending my time in another NYC for my vacation. I'd
just come back broke and with a headache you know?

I just got back from a solo trip to London (okay the trip was for
work, but the nights and weekend was mine).
I definately wouldn't describe London as another NYC (although, if
you hang outside the Picadilly Circus tube stop at night it might
seem that way).
I love the old architecture. While some hotels here and there are
rather tall, but not nearly what would be called a skyscraper, most
buildings are not more than a few stories tall.
I did the just walk around the city thing and it was great. I saw
the British Library, the British Museum, London Tower Bridge, Tower
of London, etc. I'm not much of an organized tour person, but I
hear the Tower of London tour is well worth it. Soho in the evening
or just finding a pub is always good.
Yeah, the exchange rate, at more than 2-to-1 is painful, but no
snooty french people... lol

Actually its 1 Pound = $2 and change, London as rest of Euro will
be cold at this time of year, but plenty to do, stick around
westend, Trafalgar square, and you'll love the night life. If the
city tires you take train to oxford the green will melt you inside
out.

I've been to London and Paris and I agree with Keith in that London
is more lively. You could do both, just fly into London, stay and
sight see then hop on a train to Paris. It's beautiful. You should
go to Paris with someone, I don't recommend going by yourself,
although my sister did and she enjoyed it. Also do you speak
french? If not whenever you ask a question you have to at least
attempt to speak it or they will snob you.
Hope that helps, have fun whatever you decide.

We as Americans are too isolated as it is. This is the reason our
economy is falling behind the rest of the (much more) civilized
world.
It's important that ALL Americans travel to other counties and
observe them first hand. Exchange rate be damned -- the Euro is
chump change compared to the British Pound.
International knowledge and experience will only serve to improve,
empower and inspire us.
If you're really concerned about exchange rates, try a carribean
destination or Latin America...Far more relaxing than a European,
Asian or American Metro destination.

I want to go to NY that weekend to go wine tasting but don't want
to pay for the high price hotel rooms by myself. I would like to
share a room with no more than 3 other people. I've found some
deals for less than $40/per person per night. Let me know if you

I have been trying to get down to N.Y all summer but none of my
friends want to go so now im posting here. If anyone wants to join
me for a week end in N.Y let me know. I want to spend as much time
there in my short time as I can which means. I would like to leave
right after work around 6pm Friday night. Anytime Friday is good I
just want to have all of Sat there. If we take the bus the last bus
leaves Boston around 11pm I think so we would still have all of Sat
free.
Return. I would want to leave at night on sunday.
This would be ideal but I wont mind if I cant get someone willing
to do all that. I just want to get there before it snows.

Have fun in NYC! I just went by myself to NYC for the weekend!
Granted I had friends to visit.
I checked out the KIKU the Art of the Chrysanthemum at the NY
Botanical garden in the Bronx, hit the MOMA, grabbed dinner in the
west Village. Sunday I had afternoon tea at Lady Mendl and then
wandered down around SOHO to take my bus back to Boston.
I just say go by yourself if you cannot find someone to with you. I
found the first time I went traveling by myself very liberating!
The longest I did was six weeks by myself. I find it opens you up
to meeting people and more receptive too.
