Left is Right

61 members

Are you destined to die at an early age because you live in an unforgiving right-handed world? Were you made fun of in grade school? Did “Mother Superior” whack you with a ruler for writing with the “Sinister Hand”? Were kids always giving you the left-handed scissors growing up? Do you have trouble using your computer mouse? Do you feel any more creative, intelligent, balanced or artistic than your right-handed family and friends? How many custom kitchen utensils do need to make yourself a meal? On the other hand, isn’t it nice you can hand money to the toll taker or the drive-thru attendant without dropping coins all over the ground? Aren’t you glad you didn’t live in the 1600’s when you could have been burned at the stake? If being left-handed is so bad, wouldn’t evolution have wiped out our kind eons ago? This group is designed for all of us left-handed folks. Talk about what works, what doesn't, left handed issues that we deal with, and any other lefty discussions you can think of!

    Hi everyone,

In surfing around, I found some interesting info on lefties and being left handed.

    Here are some links:

I think I saw some chatter about this test in the "Question the World" group a week or so ago:

Born into a very traditional Indian family, my mom hated the fact that I was left handed. I still am the only girl in our family (included extended) that is left handed. And from a very young age she tried to convert me to being right handed. In Indian culture it is believed that after you go to the bathroom you wash your bum with your left hand. So of course that can't be the hand that you eat with. (ummm....hadn't they been washing their hands after they did that?:))

Anyway, so my mom tried and tried to convert me. She was so embarrassed that her little girl would eat with her left hand at social occasions. Old women would stare at me wondering why I wasn't ashamed:)

But as everything else, I learned to accept it and embrass it. I don't really even think about it unless I am playing pool or trying new things like golf.

      Yea! Lefty's rule!

I too am the only lefty in a family of 6 kids. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I have an older aunt who is left handed, but the nuns used to whack her left hand with a ruler if she used it to write so she writes with her wrong hand. Nuns s#ck.

When I first learned to play golf I rented clubs for the first year I played. Half the time they didn't have left handed clubs to rent so I can hit the ball from both sides. To this day I carry a right handed pitching wedge in my bag just in case I'm stuck on the wrong side of a tree (yes, I play among the trees more than the fairway when I golf).

The only time that I remember being insistent that they accomodate my left handedness is when I took the SATs. It was my third time taking them (funny I had scored exactly the same on my first two attempts and my dad thought I could do better. I was annoyed because I scored very very well but the pressure was on.)

I got to the school and they only had right handed desks. Which as most lefties know are very hard to do work on especially for such a long test. Well I insisted that they find me a normal desk. It took over an hour and the test was delayed for everyone.

At Humboldt the largest lecture hall had one row of left handed seats...

At the beginning of the semester it would be normally semi-filled, but as the lefties got more savvy, by the end of the semester you'd have to show up a good 10 to 15 minutes before lecture to grab one of the seats.

Does that speak to lefty intuitiveness/intelligence? I don't know.

            Hi Wes,

Cool idea having a row of left handed seats! I had to "adapt" in high school and college as there were only right handed seats. I like to think that being a lefty enables me to improvise solutions to everyday proiblems a little faster than the average person. If that's true or not, I don't really know!

      Hello everyone!

Thanks for noticing this group and joining!

I didn't get much flak growing up for being a lefty. Fortunately for me, I come from a very tolerant family. Only my 1st grade teacher made a half-hearted attempt to make me switch my writing hand from left to right.

I find that being left handed is often a conversation starter with other lefties. As there are only about 15% of us in the U.S., it puts us in a nice little club!

I realized that I was a lefty just few years ago. I grew up in a culture where using your left in insulting to others so I never used it or even knew I was up until lately when I didn't have to report to sush and "offensive" move.. I started writing with my left without any training what so ever and it felt very comfortable and lighter. I feel my hand more when I write with the left. It's heavy witht he right.

The other day I text so much using my left thumbs for hours til I started to get cramps and realized jzzz I am using my left tumb to write text:) funny.

I have the same issues with hitting other people when sitting beside them, because I'm use my left hand. Most often this is at the dinner table.

It makes lots of sense to me that you are an art student and left-handed. I'm fairly sure that there is a strong correlation between being a creative person and being lefthanded.

Has any lefty here ever been diagnosed with dyslexia? I have never been diagnosed with a "full blown" case of it, but I think I may have a touch of it. For me it comes out in a couple of ways:

When I am working with groups of numbers - I have a tendency to switch numbers in groups. For example: If I see a number like 13765, I might write it down as 13675.

I also recall failing my first driving test for a license, because the instructor asked me to make a left turn, but I took a right turn. I notice when taking verbal directions from a passenger in a car, I sometimes still turn the opposite direction from the direction verbally given.

I have an uncle who is also left-handed, and he has the same problem with directions. He claims that he has a touch of dyslexia.

Otherwise, my brain seems to work pretty well!

Funny, I point in the direction instead of saying "left" or "right." My friends get annoyed when I am trying to give them directions on the phone:)

Does this happen to anyone else? I never knew if it was because I am left handed that I do this.
