Many couples dream of a fantastic honeymoon to start their lives together, but finding a honeymoon destination and planning a trip that fits your budget can be even more stressful than planning the main event. Whether you’re searching for affordable economy flights or luxurious options, these tips will help you find cheap flights to honeymoon destinations and plan an unforgettable getaway that’s both memorable and budget-friendly.

How to snag cheap honeymoon flights: Tips by experts

1. Book within the Goldilocks Window

For domestic flights, we suggest booking 1–3 months in advance. If your plans involve international travel, aim for 2–8 months ahead. This is what we call the "Goldilocks Window," a tried-and-true strategy for finding the best airfare deals.

If your honeymoon coincides with peak travel seasons, such as summer or winter holidays, it’s essential to extend these windows. For domestic flights, consider booking 3–5 months early, while international trips may require planning 4–10 months in advance to secure the best fares.

Don’t wait until the last minute. While prices can sometimes drop 1–2 months before a trip, last-minute deals are rare, and prices rise significantly in the last few weeks before departure.

2. Search flexible dates to find the best date for your trip

If you have any flexibility, even a day or two, use the flexible dates search on your preferred search site or OTA (online travel agency). Sites like KayakSkyscanner, and Google Flights make it easy to see the cheapest days to travel within a two-month window.

Sometimes, all it takes to find a better fare is moving your trip dates by even a day—a simple strategy for how to find cheap flights.

3. Use the Google Flights Explore map to find the cheapest place to fly

Google Flights’ Explore Map lets you compare prices to destinations worldwide. Simply input your dates and departure airports but leave the destination blank (or put in a region like Asia or Europe), and it will show you the cheapest places to fly from your departure airports.

You can search for specific dates or widen your search to a one-week or two-week trip in a specific month. You can even input up to seven departure airports. These features make Google Flights perfect for couples looking for affordable honeymoon destinations.

4. Focus on getting across the ocean as cheaply as possible

For long-haul honeymoons, focus on securing the cheapest flight across the ocean. We call this the Greek Islands Trick.

Here’s how it works: Rather than trying to book one itinerary to your dream destination (say, NYC to Santorini), book the cheapest flight you can find to the European continent, and then book a separate roundtrip flight to your final destination (in this case, that might mean booking NYC to London and then London to Santorini). You can save hundreds by booking two roundtrips instead of one itinerary.

5. Go somewhere your dollar goes further

Think of the word “honeymoon,” and you might come up with images of an overwater bungalow in Tahiti or the Maldives, an oceanfront villa in Mexico or the Caribbean, or a fabulously chic apartment in Paris. And while the tried-and-true honeymoon destinations have undeniable appeal, many come with a high price tag.

Exchange rates can dramatically affect your travel budget. Look at less-trodden spots where you get more bang for your buck. Destinations in Southeast Asia, South America, and Eastern Europe are affordable alternatives.

6.  Take advantage of credit/debit card travel programs

Credit and debit card travel programs can make your dream luxurious honeymoon much cheaper, thanks to their rewards. Whether it's miles, points, or cash back for everyday spending, you can use them during your trip. However, if you want to get the best redemption rate, consider transferring your points to airline or hotel partners directly.

These cards often come with exclusive benefits like access to airport lounges, priority boarding, or discounted rates on travel experiences. Some of them also provide special deals on curated experiences like romantic dinners, spa packages, or adventure activities, giving you memorable honeymoon moments without breaking the bank.

Real-life honeymoon saving experiences

Going member, Nicole W. let her deal help her decide where to go: “We originally wanted to fly into Rome, spend some time there, and then head down to Sardinia. The prices kept climbing upwards, reaching $1,000 roundtrip per person, which was much more than we wanted to pay. Then we received a Going email for nonstop roundtrip tickets to Madrid in the $400s and decided to jump on it! We had an incredible honeymoon! We stayed in Madrid for a week and then headed down to Mallorca for 11 days to hit the beaches.”

Going member Natalie H. spent her honeymoon in Vietnam and Cambodia:  “I signed up for Premium specifically for booking our honeymoon. We didn't know where we wanted to go, but it had to be in December and we wanted to go somewhere warm and inexpensive. A deal to Ho Chi Minh City popped up, and we booked it! We were able to take an 18-day vacation, pop over to Cambodia for a few days, and had the adventure of a lifetime. All told, we spent less than $3,000 on our 18-day honeymoon (including flights), and we don't feel as though we sacrificed one bit.”

Frequently asked questions

Which place is best for a honeymoon on a low budget?
Consider destinations that offer great value without compromising on romance or adventure. Places like Cartagena or Bali are affordable international honeymoon options. For a cheap honeymoon in the US, opt for Cannon Beach or Lake Tahoe.
How can I save money on my honeymoon?
Save money by booking flights 2–8 months in advance for international trips and 1–3 months in advance for domestic trips. Price tracking tools like Going's real-time alerts can also help you find cheap flights. Shoulder-season travel, loyalty rewards, and credit card perks can also cut costs without compromising the experience.
Is there really a cheaper day to buy airline tickets?
No. There’s no single cheapest day to buy flights, as prices fluctuate constantly due to dynamic algorithms. Deals can appear any day of the week, so using tools like Going to track prices is more effective. Flexibility with travel dates and destinations further increases your chances of finding affordable tickets.
How far out should you book a honeymoon?
For international honeymoons, book flights 4–10 months in advance if you’re planning to travel during a peak season; for domestic trips, 3–5 months ahead is ideal. Booking early is especially important for high-demand destinations or peak travel seasons.
