Credit card transfer bonuses are limited-time offers that allow you to squeeze more value out of your points. Every month or so, banks work with travel partners to offer an extra bonus when you transfer points to a particular airline partner.

Taking advantage of a transfer bonus means you will need to transfer fewer credit card points to the airline partner in order to redeem for a free flight. Transfer bonuses can range from 10% to 30% or more, but they are typically only available for about a month.

Should you transfer points when there are transfer bonuses?

While we all love a deal, only transfer points when you have an immediate plan to use them. Transferring points to a partner is a one-way street, so once you convert credit card points into airline miles, you can’t change them back.

Over the years, many airlines have devalued their miles, meaning it costs you more miles to redeem for an award flight. The last thing you want is to transfer your points to airline miles and have them sit in the account losing value, all because you transferred without a specific flight redemption in mind.

Frequently asked questions about transfer bonuses

How often do transfer bonuses happen?
Banks tend to announce transfer bonuses at the start of a new month. Bonuses to a specific partner often last about a month, but some may extend a bit longer.
Which transfer partners are targeted for bonuses?
There’s no real science to which airline partners offer transfer bonuses or when they will happen. That said, it appears some airlines do offer transfer bonuses more frequently than others. British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Avianca LifeMiles, and Air France/KLM are some of the more common transfer bonuses you may see pop up.
What are transfer partners?
Transfer partners are often the best way to maximize value from your points. Each bank has about a dozen airline and hotel travel partners that you can transfer your credit card points to directly. To transfer points to a partner, you link your airline loyalty account number to your credit card profile. If you don’t have one with a specific airline, you can create one for free. Then, you’ll transfer credit card points in increments of 1,000 to the airline partner. Most of the points transfer at a ratio of 1:1, but that can vary. Your credit card issuer will display the transfer ratio for each partner.
