Top tips for finding a cheap flight out of Austin (AUS)

Click the buy button in the Goldilocks Window

There isn’t one specific time of day or day of the week when airline tickets are cheaper to buy, but there is a period of time before a flight when airfare tends to be at its best price. For domestic trips, it’s 1-3 months beforehand. For international trips, it’s 2-8 months before. We call this sweet spot the Goldilocks Window.

If, however, your trip falls during a peak travel season or you’re hoping to fly over a major holiday, you should be looking for flights even before the standard Goldilocks Window. Anyone who wants to travel over Christmas, for instance, should probably be booking in July. No matter when you plan to travel, be sure to book your flights before the airline raises prices as the departure date nears. Fares go up dramatically at the 21-, 14-, and 7-day points before a flight.

See if the Greek Islands Trick might work for you

We have a few favorite “travel hacks” for saving money on airfare, and the Greek Islands Trick is one of them. Mind you, this is a technique that works for destinations all over the globe—not just the Greek Islands. The islands do make a good illustration of what the trick entails, though.

The idea is to get as close as you can to your actual destination for as little as you can. If you’re eyeing a trip to Santorini, for example, it may be discouraging to see roundtrip fares from AUS in the $1,800 range. If, however, you look for the cheapest flight to Europe, you might notice a bargain fare to Rome for $470 roundtrip. All you need to do after that is book a $200 roundtrip ticket from Rome to Santorini, and you’ve just saved a bundle on airfare.

Yes, this does mean you’ll need to spend a little more time on the logistical planning details, but the savings might just be worth it.

Look at near (and far) departure airports

It may not sound logical to look into flights that depart from Atlanta or Los Angeles if you live near Austin. You might check fares from San Antonio, but any further away, and it’s not worth the hassle, right? Not necessarily.

We see amazing deals departing from airports all over the place, both big and small, and sometimes the savings are big enough to justify the extra flight from Austin that you’d need to take. Consider the jaw-dropping $63 roundtrip fare from Atlanta to Chile, for example, or the $202 roundtrip fare from LA to Japan. Would that be worth the “hassle” of a separate roundtrip ticket from Austin? We sure think so.

Keep travel plans flexible

Most people choose their vacation dates first, booking airfare after that. When your dates are locked in, though, you risk missing out on cheaper fares. High demand for tickets (especially during traditionally popular travel times, like summer or Spring Break) means airlines are going to raise prices.

If you have the luxury of flexibility, you’ll save money on airfare if you schedule your trip based on when you find the best deal on flights. If you don’t have that luxury, you can at least try to avoid flying on the most expensive days (Fridays and Sundays). Aim for the days when flights tend to be cheaper instead (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays).

Set fare alerts

You probably have far more interesting things to do with your time than constantly rechecking the always-changing ticket prices for your upcoming vacation. But it also feels like if you don’t stay vigilant on airfare sites, you’ll end up paying way too much for your flights. This is where technology can be super helpful. Set up a fare alert for your itinerary, and you’ll get an email alert when the price is right, and it’s time to buy. Just remember that if you’re considering multiple itineraries, that means setting up multiple alerts. Or? Join Going and let us do all that work for you.

How early should I arrive to Austin–Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) before my flight?

The rule of thumb for when to get to the airport is two hours ahead for a domestic flight and three hours ahead for an international one. The Austin–Bergstrom website, however, advises travelers with flights leaving from the Barbara Jordan Terminal to arrive 2.5 hours before a domestic flight. Travelers with flights departing from the South Terminal, on the other hand, are advised to arrive 1.5 hours before departure. And, as is the case with every airport and travel scenario, the best time for you to get to the airport may depend on your specific trip’s details.

How big is the airport, and where is your gate? The Austin airport isn’t very big at all, and once you get through security, it’s unlikely to take more than 10-15 minutes to reach the gates at the farthest ends of the Barbara Jordan Terminal. At the South Terminal, the walking times are usually in the single digits. This doesn’t include getting through the security checkpoint itself, however, or any delays caused by airport construction projects. Estimated wait times at AUS security checkpoints can now be found on the myTSA mobile app.

Do you need to check in at the airport? Airlines set cutoff times for passengers checking in, usually about 30-60 minutes before departure. After this point, you won’t be able to check in or get on the plane. If you’re unable to check in at home beforehand, be sure to allow enough time to do it at the airport.

Do you have bags to check? Traveling with only a carry-on can make things easier, but if you need to check a bag at the airport, you’ll need extra time for that. Again, there’s a cutoff time set by the airlines (usually 45-60 minutes before departure), after which your luggage won’t get on the plane with you.

How busy might the airport be? All the estimates of how long it takes to get through security or walk from the check-in counter to your gate reflect the airport when it’s not at its most busy. If you’re flying during peak season or over a major holiday, you can expect longer lines at security.

In most cases, it’s probably best to follow the Austin airport’s advice about when to arrive before a flight—especially for the South Terminal, given how small it is. If you’re flying from the Barbara Jordan Terminal, have only a carry-on bag, and have already checked in at home, though, you may be able to shave a bit of time off the suggested 2.5-hour buffer.
