Top tips for finding a cheap flight out of Detroit (DTW)

Aim for the Goldilocks Window

The cost of airline tickets is changing all the time, and it can be hard to know when to book your flight. There are periods of time before a flight, though, when airfare tends to be at its cheapest. For domestic flights, it’s about 1-3 months beforehand. For international flights, it’s 2-8 months ahead. We call this the Goldilocks Window.

There are cases, however, when we recommend booking even further in advance. If you’re flying during the peak season or a big travel holiday, it’s advisable to add a month or more to your booking timeline. If you’re planning a Christmastime getaway, in other words, you should be looking at flights in July. And keep in mind that airlines typically raise prices in the last month leading up to a flight at the 21-day, 14-day, and 7-day points—so be sure to buy your tickets before that.

Give our Greek Islands Trick a try

Everyone loves a good travel hack, especially when it’s pretty easy to execute. With our beloved Greek Islands Trick, the hack is to find a cheap international flight to a major hub that is close to—but not actually in—your vacation destination. Then, you’d book a separate, short flight (or a train ticket or even a ferry) to get where you really want to go. And don’t be fooled by the name. The Greek Islands Trick works for places all over the globe, but the islands make for a good illustration of this hack.

Let’s assume you’re planning a holiday in Santorini, so you start checking airfare from Detroit. You’re probably unhappy to see that tickets start at $1,200 roundtrip, but if you look at flying from Detroit to Paris instead, you may find a roundtrip ticket for under $500. Even if you add on the $150 flight to Santorini from Paris, you’re still coming out ahead. Sure, it means you’ll have to do a little more logistical juggling with two separate itineraries, but sometimes the savings are worth it.

Look at other departure airports near and far

Detroit’s airport is big enough that there are good deals available on flights out of DTW on a fairly regular basis, but that doesn’t mean they’re always the best prices. If you expand your search to include fares from other departure airports, you may find something that makes getting to that airport worth the extra time.

You might find a cheaper fare from nearby Cleveland, but by casting an even wider net you might stumble upon something like a $63 fare from Atlanta to Chile or a $202 fare from LA to Japan. Couple those jaw-dropping fares with an $83 roundtrip flight to Atlanta or a $162 roundtrip flight to LA, and you’ve got the makings of a fare that you won’t be able to stop bragging about.

Plan trips when it’s cheaper to fly

If you want to save money on flights, one of the best ways to do that is to keep your plans flexible. Rather than choosing your travel dates first and then looking at airfare, this means looking at the cost of airline tickets and scheduling your vacation when the prices are lower.

This isn’t always easy, however. Summer, for instance, is the peak season for much of the world for good reason—kids are out of school, and the weather is conducive to those beach trips many people love. With so much demand for flights, it’s no wonder that prices go up.

If you can aim for the shoulder seasons, which sit between the high and low seasons, you can save a good deal on airfare and not compromise on the weather too much. And, if your vacation dates are set in stone, you can at least try to fly on the days when it tends to be cheaper (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays). Avoid the more expensive days (Fridays and Sundays) if possible.

Sign up for fare alert emails

Keeping a constant watch on ever-changing airline ticket prices is exhausting, especially when you’ve got all kinds of other things you’d like to do with your time. In this case, you can put technology to work for you. Sign up for fare alerts for the specific trip you’d like to take. Then, when the price drops into the range you’re looking for, you’ll get an email notification about it. Do this a few months in advance to get the best possible fare. Or, if you’d like to outsource even that work, you can join Going, and we’ll send you the very best deals.

How early should I arrive to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) before my flight?

As a general rule, travelers are advised to arrive at the airport two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international one. Detroit Metro Airport, however, recommends you arrive 1.5 hours before a domestic flight and two hours before an international flight. Even with that suggestion, though, it’s worth considering your specific trip to find out whether that’s enough time.

How big is the airport, and where is your gate? Detroit’s airport has the distinction of having the second-longest concourse in the world—the McNamara Terminal’s Concourse A. There are transportation options within that concourse, but if your departure gate is at the far end of the A Concourse you should allow for a little more time to get there. And, even if your departure gate is in a different concourse, it’s a good idea to check an airport map to find out how far you’ll need to walk to get from security to the gate.

Do you need to check in at the airport or check any bags? Checking in online and traveling with only carry-on bags usually means you can save time at the airport. If you have to check in at the airport, or if you have any suitcases that have to be checked, just keep in mind that airlines have a cutoff time after which you (or your bags) won’t get on the flight. For passengers, the cutoff time for checking in is usually 30-60 minutes before departure, and for bags, it’s usually 45-60 minutes before.

How busy is the airport likely to be? On an average day, the security wait time at DTW is likely to be at least 15 minutes. If you’re traveling on a busier day or around a holiday, though, you can expect much longer waits just to get through security.

We’d recommend following the airport’s own advice, getting to the airport at least 1.5 hours before a trip—though two hours ahead is probably a safer bet most of the time.
