Top tips for finding a cheap flight to Florida
Book your trip in the Goldilocks Window
We find great deals on flights all the time, so there’s really no specific day of the week or time of day when you should be clicking the buy button. There is, however, a period before a flight when ticket prices are usually at their lowest. We call this the Goldilocks Window, and it’s when we recommend most people book their flights. It’s about 1-3 months before a domestic flight and 2-8 months before an international one.
Keep in mind that if your trip will be during the peak season or over a major holiday, you should start looking even further in advance. Flying home to see the family at Christmas or planning a New Year’s Eve at Disney? Look for flights in July. And, whatever you do, book your trip before airlines raise prices at the last minute—they almost always do that at 21, 14, and 7 days before departure.
Fly out of a different departure airport
Florida’s passenger airports have direct flights from airports all over the US, big and small, but that doesn’t mean the best deals are available from your home airport. We find exceptional deals all the time, and if you’re casting a wider net to begin with, you stand a better chance of catching one of them.
Folks in Seattle might feel like $600 roundtrip to Key West is just the price you pay to fly to Florida. But look at the bigger picture, and you might find that there’s a fabulous $200 roundtrip ticket from Phoenix to Key West. Even if you add the $70 ticket from Seattle to Phoenix, you’re still saving some money. It’s always worth the time to zoom out a bit and double-check the fares from other airports before you book your flight, no matter where you’re coming from. You might save big.
Fly when it’s cheaper
This may sound like a no-brainer, but this is really about flexibility. Being locked into specific travel dates is one of the easiest ways to overpay for flights. Instead of blocking out your vacation on the calendar first and only then looking at airfare, try scanning the fares to your dream destination and choosing your travel dates based on when flights are cheaper.
Of course, this can be hard to do when things like school schedules and weather requirements may dictate when you can travel. If you’re unable to avoid peak season, there are a couple of things you can do to save a little bit on airfare. First, fly on the days when tickets are usually cheaper (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays) and avoid the more expensive days (Fridays and Sundays). Second, if summer is the only time you can travel, you may find slightly lower fares in early June and late August.
Set alerts for specific itineraries
We know better than almost anyone that keeping track of the constant changes in the cost of flying is a full-time gig. Most travelers have other things they need or want to do with their time, which is where fare alerts come in handy. You can choose an itinerary you want and sign up for a fare alert for it. Then, when the cost drops into the range you want, you’ll get an email telling you it’s time to buy. We recommend folks do this a few months before they want to fly to get the best deal—and remember, if you’re looking at multiple flight options, you’ll have to set up multiple alerts. Or? You can join Going, and we’ll take care of all this for you.
Since Florida has multiple major airports, with a variety of airlines offering direct service from cities all over the country, the chances are very good that you’ll be able to find a good price on a flight—Orlando alone has nonstop flights from 100 different US airports. But be sure to check some of the smaller Florida airports (like Fort Lauderdale and Tampa), which sometimes have cheaper fares.
Frequently asked questions about flying to Florida
When is high season in Florida?
Florida is one of those places blessed with balmy weather almost all year, which means you can’t really pinpoint one specific high season. There are times when it tends to be a bit busier and more expensive, though—Spring Break (March-April) and the winter months (anywhere from November-March, depending on the city) are particularly popular in beach towns. The Christmas and New Year’s festivities at places like Disney World, Key West, and Miami are often big draws for tourists.
When is the best time to visit Florida?
With nearly year-round sun, chances are pretty good that any time you want to visit Florida is a good time to go—just pay attention to hurricane season, which usually falls somewhere between June and November. You might luck out with great weather, but you might also be dealing with a storm. It’s also worth noting that the spring (roughly March-May) is a favorite among many Florida travelers weather-wise, but it’s also a time when Spring Break revelers are flocking to the state’s beaches in droves.
How many airports are there in Florida?
There are some 140 airports throughout the state, with 19 of those handling passenger traffic. The biggest and busiest airports in Florida are (in order) Orlando International Airport (MCO), Miami International Airport (MIA), Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), and Tampa International Airport (TPA). We’ve found the most deals on flights to Orlando, followed by Tampa, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale.
Which city in Florida is the easiest to get to?
In terms of volume, the cities with the most flights coming in are the busy airports listed above: Orlando, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Tampa. The airports with the most deals are Orlando and Tampa, but the ones with the most nonstop domestic flights are Orlando and Fort Lauderdale. Given all these metrics, Orlando is arguably the “easiest” city in Florida to get to, but here are some additional details about the biggest four airports:
Orlando International Airport (MCO) is a hub for Silver Airways (a regional carrier), a focus city for JetBlue, and a home base for Frontier, Avelo, Southwest, and Spirit. There are 100 direct flights into Orlando from elsewhere in the United States, as well as direct flights from more than 20 countries around the world.
Tampa International Airport (TPA) is a hub for Silver Airways and an operating base for Southwest, Breeze, and Frontier. There are 76 direct flights to Tampa from US airports, along with 10 other countries.
Miami International Airport (MIA) is a hub for American Airlines and a focus city for Frontier, Avianca, LATAM, and Spirit. There are 82 direct flights into Miami from elsewhere in the United States, plus direct flights from more than 60 other countries.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is a hub for Silver Airways, a focus city for JetBlue, and an operating base for Allegiant, Southwest, and Spirit. There are 89 direct flights into FLL from other US destinations, as well as 25 different countries.
What are the rules for traveling with pets to Florida?
The Florida Department of Agricultural Services requires that you have proof of up-to-date rabies vaccination for your pet, but keep in mind your airline may require additional paperwork depending on the type of animal. Be sure to check with your airline and the FDAC website for more detailed information.
How long is the flight to Florida?
The duration of a flight to Florida depends entirely on where you’re flying from and which Florida airport you’re landing in. From the northeastern part of the US, it’s about 2.5-3 hours. From the midwest, it’s about 2.75-3.5 hours. From the southwest, it’s about 4.5 hours. From the west coast, it’s about 5.5-6.75 hours. And from other airports in the southeast, it may only be 1-1.5 hours—barely enough time to crack open your bag of peanuts.
