Top tips for finding a cheap flight out of Tampa (TPA)

Target the Goldilocks Window for booking flights

Last-minute bargain basement airfare is increasingly rare. In fact, the cost of a flight typically jumps 21, 14, and 7 days before the departure date (so you should definitely plan to buy your tickets before those points if possible). There are, however, periods before a flight when ticket prices are usually at their cheapest. We call this the Goldilocks Window.

If you’re taking a domestic flight, the Goldilocks Window is about 1-3 months beforehand. If it’s an international trip, the window is a bit longer, at 2-8 months in advance. There are caveats, though—if your trip happens to be during the peak travel season or over a big travel holiday, you should be looking at fares even further in advance.

Get creative with the Greek Islands Trick

Sometimes you need to think outside the box to find the best deals on airfare. If the itinerary from Tampa’s airport to your dream destination feels too expensive, you can try looking for fares from Tampa to a major international hub that’s closer to (but not in) the place you really want to be. From there, you’d book a short flight, train ride, or even ferry trip to close the gap. We call it the Greek Islands Trick, but don’t let the name fool you—this technique works for destinations all over the world. The Greek Islands just happen to be a good illustrative example.

Let’s say, for example, that you want to get to Santorini, but then you find the cost of tickets is $1,200 or more roundtrip. If you zoom out a bit, you may find a much better deal on a flight to London, with roundtrip tickets that can come in around $450. Combine that with the roughly $150 roundtrip flight from London to Santorini, and you’ve just saved a bundle on your trip. Sure, this method requires a bit more logistical juggling, but it’s hard to argue with the kind of money you can save.

Look at alternate departure airports

This is a bit like the Greek Islands Trick but in reverse. Rather than checking the fares from only one airport, this means you’d compare the fares from multiple departure airports to find the best one. In some cases, that may be really nearby (such as Orlando International Airport (MCO) being a little more than an hour’s drive from Tampa). In other cases, the best deals on airfare to the place you want to travel may be nowhere near you—and it may still be the right idea.

Consider that Going regularly finds absolutely spectacular fare deals that make an additional domestic flight completely worth it. We’ve seen a roundtrip fare from Los Angeles to Japan for $202 and a roundtrip fare from Atlanta to Chile for $63. Again, there’s a bit more planning that goes into an itinerary like this and… Did we mention the flight to Chile for $63?

Plan trips around when it’s cheaper to fly

Most travelers figure out when they want to take a trip, and only then do they start looking at airfare. Demand for flights is particularly high during peak travel seasons like summer when school schedules let the whole family travel and the weather is conducive to playing outdoors. But that kind of increased demand also means higher prices on lots of aspects of traveling, including airfare.

One of the best things you can do to save money on airfare is to do the planning in the opposite direction. First, look at the cost of flights to where you want to go. Then, choose your travel dates based on when the flights are cheapest. If you can’t be that flexible with your travel plans, however, you can still save a bit on airfare by aiming for shoulder seasons (the months on either side of a peak season, like spring and autumn instead of summer) and by avoiding the most expensive days to fly (Fridays and Sundays). Try to book flights on the days when it’s usually cheaper to fly: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

Sign up for airfare alerts

Rather than trying to become an expert in tracking the fluctuating cost of flights, you can put technology to work for you. When you’ve got an itinerary in mind, sign up for fare alerts for that itinerary. Then, when airfare goes down into the range you’re looking for, you’ll get an email letting you know it may be time to buy. If you’ve got more than one potential itinerary, you’ll have to set up multiple alerts. We recommend you do this at least a few months before you plan to fly so you stand the best chance of getting a great deal. On the other hand, you can also join Going and let us do all of the searching for you.

How early should I arrive to Tampa International Airport (TPA) before my flight?

The Tampa Airport echoes the general recommendations for travelers about when to get to the airport before a flight: two hours before departure for a domestic flight and three hours before for an international flight. Depending on the specifics of your itinerary, however, you may not need as much time.

How big is the airport, and where is your gate? The Tampa airport isn’t huge, but it still takes time to get from the doors of the main terminal to the right concourse and your gate. The terminal is connected to the airsides by automated shuttles that run regularly back and forth, and each of the Airside buildings is small enough that walking from one end to the other typically takes no more than a few minutes, but it may be a good idea to look at airport maps and find out where your gate is.

Do you need to check in or check luggage at the airport? If you can check in online and have no luggage to check in, that saves a great deal of time at the airport. Not only that, each airline has cutoff times after when you can’t check in for a flight or check any bags. It’s usually around 30-60 minutes before departure for the former and 45-60 minutes beforehand for the latter.

How busy will the airport be? The airport’s website says that security wait times are usually about 20 minutes during “non-peak times” and 45 minutes during “peak times,” so take your itinerary into account. If you’re flying on a busy day or during a busy season, allow for more time to get through the checkpoint.

Overall, we’d recommend getting to Tampa International at least one hour before a flight, although (depending on your specific trip) 1.5-2 hours may be a better idea.

How far is Tampa International Airport (TPA) from downtown Tampa?

Tampa’s airport is only nine miles from downtown Tampa via the usual route. When traffic is light, it can take less than 15 minutes. During rush hour, it’s advisable to allow for at least 30-40 minutes.

What are the different transportation options for going from the city center to Tampa International Airport (TPA)?

Travelers have a few options for getting to TPA from the city.

By taxi or ride share: The airport is close enough to Tampa that it’s a pretty quick taxi trip, and there’s a flat fee of $35 from downtown to Tampa Airport. The average cost of a rideshare trip is around $20-25, depending on traffic and demand.

By public transportation: Two local public bus companies serve the airport. HART bus lines 10 and 30 link downtown Tampa with the airport, stopping at the Rental Car Center, and fares start at $2.
