Unfortunately, there’s no secret formula for finding the exact perfect day to book flights. However, there is a time period when flights are cheaper. We call it the Goldilocks Window because it’s not too far away from your departure date, but it’s also not too last-minute. It’s about 1–3 months before a domestic trip and 2–8 months before an international trip.

If you’re planning to travel during a busy period, like March in Guyana, start looking even earlier. Think September for a March trip, for example. We know it can be tempting to hold out, hoping prices drop, but the closer to your departure date, the more expensive flights get. We see fare jumps happen at the 21-, 14-, and 7-day points before a trip, so don’t wait until the last minute to book.

Sometimes, fares just don’t drop no matter how diligently you check them. Enter: our beloved Greek Islands Trick. Despite the name, it can be used all over the world. The goal is to get as close to your destination as you can for the cheapest price, then find another flight or other mode of transit for the last leg.

Say you want to fly from Boston to Guyana in March, but prices are close to $1,000. Instead, look for flights to Miami or Panama City, Panama. If you find a great deal to one of those cities, say for under $400, you can then look for a flight from there to Guyana. It requires a bit more work and planning, but it could save you a couple hundred bucks you can put toward a night in a hotel.

Like with the Greek Islands Trick, you can save money by being flexible with your home airport as well. Let’s stick with the Boston example. If flights to Guyana are out of your price range, try searching flights from New York, Philadelphia, or DC. We see incredible deals every day, and if you’re only checking your home airport you could miss out. If you see a deal for under $400 from New York to Georgetown, it’s likely worth taking a train or bus ride to New York.

The cheapest time to visit Guyana is during the rainy season, when tourists are scarce. If you also want to avoid the rainy season, while also avoiding crowds and still finding a deal, try visiting during the shoulder season. Shoulder seasons are the periods just before and after a destination's high season, like April–May or October–November in Guyana.

The more flexible you can be with your dates, even if traveling during peak season, the better. Play around with dates, and see if certain weeks are cheaper than others. You can also save money by flying on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, which are generally cheaper than traveling on Fridays and Sundays.

What is the easiest way to save money on flights? Set fare alerts, and let technology take the wheel. All you have to do is set up fare alerts for your travel dates, and you’ll get an email when prices drop. We recommend doing this at least a few months out from your trip so you can see the deals that come up during the Goldilocks Window. If your dates or airports are flexible, set up a few alerts to cover your bases.

Guyana isn’t the easiest place to reach from the US. Only three cities offer nonstop flights. Still, most visitors from the US, Canada, Mexico, or South America can reach Guyana with just one stop. From the rest of the world, you’ll make one or two connections.
