Top tips for finding a cheap flight to Honduras

Book in the Goldilocks Window

When looking for deals on flights, it’s best to start your search early—but not too early. The sweet spot for finding cheap flights falls about 1–3 months before a domestic flight and 2–8 months before an international flight, a time period we call the Goldilocks Window.

If you plan to travel during peak season, like December–March in Honduras, start looking a little earlier. Start your search in June for a December trip, for example. Last-minute deals are few and far between, especially during busy travel periods. As tempting as it can be to hold out for a deal, resist the urge. In fact, we’ve found that prices regularly jump at the 21-, 14-, and 7-day points before departure dates, so it’s best to book before those dates if at all possible.

Use the Greek Islands Trick

One of our favorite tips for finding cheap flights to the Greek islands can actually work all over the world. The Greek Islands Trick involves getting as close to your final destination as you can for the cheapest price, then finding a cheap regional flight or other mode of transit for the last leg.

If you really want to fly from San Francisco to Honduras in January, for example, but prices are more than you’re willing to pay, look for a flight to Houston, Miami, or Panama City instead. If you find a great deal, you can then look for a cheap flight from one of those cities to Honduras. This type of travel requires a bit more work and effort, but it can save you a few hundred bucks that you can put toward your hotel or snorkel excursion.

Search alternative departure airports

You can also save money by searching for alternate departure airports. If you live in Richmond, Virginia, for example, flights to Honduras could be prohibitively expensive. Instead, consider flights from DC or Charlotte. If you find a good deal, it’s likely worth a bit of a road trip.

We see amazing deals every day from all over the country, so it pays to check nearby—and not so nearby—airports. For long-haul flights, it can be worth looking even farther away and considering an extra domestic flight. Again, it requires more planning and effort, but it could save a boatload.

Fly when it’s cheaper

Winter is the busy season in Honduras—and for good reason. Visitors from much of the US want to escape cold weather and enjoy Honduras’ beautiful beaches; plus, the weather is dry and warm. You can save the most money by traveling during the off season, from July–November in Honduras.

We like traveling during shoulder seasons––the periods just before and after high season. Think April–June or late November–early December in Honduras. During these months you still have nice weather but also lower flight and hotel prices, as well as fewer tourists.

Set alerts for specific trips

Keeping track of ever-changing airfare is work––we know that firsthand. The good news is there are tools that can do the work for you. Set up fare alerts for your travel itinerary, and you’ll get an email when prices drop into your target range or by a significant amount. Do this well in advance of your trip, before the Goldilocks Window we talked about above, so you can see prices drop. And if your dates are flexible, set a few alerts.

Honduras is well connected to a few major US cities, such as Atlanta, Miami, New York, and Houston. Most visitors from the US can reach Honduras on a nonstop or one-stop flight.
