While there’s no magic way of knowing the exact day a certain flight will be the cheapest, there is a window of time before the flight when you have the best chance of scoring a deal. Let’s say you have your heart set on a visit to Indianapolis, but roundtrip flights from where you live are pretty expensive. Try looking into a flight to Chicago instead and then driving to Indy from there.

All you have to do is focus on finding the cheapest flight possible that gets you near your destination, then book a cheap connecting flight (or rent a car) to get the rest of the way there. Sure, this may add a little extra travel and research time, but the savings can be worth the trouble.

An alternative to adjusting the airport you fly into is choosing a different airport to fly from. If you live in San Jose, for example, and want to get to Indy on the cheap, look for flights out of SFO and Oakland as well as San Jose. You may be surprised how much flight prices can differ among nearby airports. There may even be a deal from an airport farther away that’s worth adding a leg to the journey.

Summer is an ideal time to travel, as families can take advantage of school vacations and some of the most popular destinations around the world experience beautiful weather. The only issue is that airlines can charge significantly higher rates during busy travel times. That means prices are high not only during the summer but also around the winter holidays.

If you can avoid traveling during peak season, great! You’ll save a bunch of money and get to avoid the crowds in popular destinations as an added bonus. Sometimes you can’t avoid peak season travel, though, in which case you can try to book flights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays to find the best deals. You can also travel in the first or last weeks of the summer to save some money or look at international travel around Thanksgiving when most people are flying domestically.
